Does The Oculus Rift Live Up To The Hype?

Hype?

Hype is what gives VR its power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

VR is an industry that is well acquainted with hype.

Powrful head mounted dislpays, especially the Oculus Rift, were looked upon during development as the possible fulfillment of nerd-prophecy. True VR has been a dream for the uber-geek community since before the 1960s.

On March 28 the Rift officially launched. Throughout its progression from duct-tape fantasy to sleek, shiny reality, the Rift has managed to build a foundation of ravenous fans who have been envisioning this moment.

Now that it’s here the question needs to be asked: was it worth it?

UploadVR GameCast – Episode 6: Does The Rift Live Up to The Hype?

In this episode Joe strongly considers replacing the still absent David (congrats again on that wedding pal) with a certain smooth-voiced Australian by the name of Tony Allen.

You may recognize Tony from singing lead vocals for Maroon 5:

Or from his ongoing video production work for UploadVR:

Either way, Tony’s story is one that reflects many Rift purchasers out there. He followed the scene since the Kickstarter. He pre-ordered within seconds of the order page going live. And he experienced significant delays.

Now he has his Rift and I’m asking him one very serious question on behalf of the entire VR community: Does it live up to the hype?

Some highlights include:

-The full sometimes sad, sometimes joyous saga of one man’s journey from no Rift, to yes Rift.

-Answering the tough questions such as: is the content library substantial enough? Is setup easy or difficult? And, will you want to pick the thing up again after the initial rush wears off.

-Tony’s Australian accent (its worth repeating)

UploadVR's GameCast > Multiplayer Shooters Are Taking The Leap Into Virtual Reality

Multiplayer shooters are one of – if not the -most popular gaming genres of all time. The Call of Duty franchise alone has raked in over $11 billion (with a “b”) in lifetime revenue. When Golden Eye debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 we were all introduced to the special magic of gunning your friends down and then immediately denying any “screen cheating...

UploadVR's GameCast > Is Oculus DRM Building A Walled Garden Or A Successful Company?

The Oculus Rift is experiencing what some would call a rocky first few months on the market. What was once one of the most hotly anticipated pieces of consumer technology is now becoming a lightning rod for controversy.
