Women & the Dangers of Statins
women-and-the-dangers-of-statinsMen and women are very different from each other, both physically and mentally. Why do the drug companies ignore this fact?

Dr. Larry Kaskel, host of The Healthy Skeptic radio show, is well aware that men and women are very different... physically and mentally.

With five female partners in his practice, how could he not be?

What he doesn't understand, however, is why the pharmaceutical companies and even doctors continue to put men and women in the same category. By doing so, these companies are actually increasing the potential deaths in women.

Dr. Kaskel explains that one particular danger is in prescribing statins to women. A statin is a popular drug prescribed to lower cholesterol. According to some doctors, if you lower your cholesterol levels, you reduce your chances of having a heart attack. So, why wouldn't Dr. Kaskel prescribe this medicine to his female patients?

Not so fast... there is no data or scientific evidence showing that if you are a female and take a statin that you will NOT die of a heart attack. There is, however, evidence showing that it actually increases a woman's chances of having a cardiac episode.

With that being said, why would doctors still prescribe statins to their female patients?

The New York Times wrote an article about the corruption in medicine and how doctors actually get paid based on the prescriptions they write.

That's a pretty bold -- and shocking -- statement. Too bad it's true.

The take-away from this enlightening segment is to make sure you do your research about any drug your doctor prescribes, especially if you are a woman. Ask your doctor questions, and, as Dr. Kaskel would say, "Don't let anyone do your thinking for you."
