There is a new weight loss plan out there, and the focus is properly feeding the bacteria that lives in your gut.

But does this approach work?

Dr. Raphael Kellman runs The Kellman Center of Integrative and Functional Medicine, and he truly believes that the microbiome is the absolute key to successful weight loss.

So, what exactly is a microbiome? A microbiome is the community of trillions of bacteria that reside in your gut. They are actually friendly bacteria and they work with your metabolism, your immune system and help your body in many ways.

Here is an incredible fact: The amount of microbes found in the gut outnumbers the amount of cells that make up the human body 10-1.  Although we now know that microbiomes play an integral role in overall health, how in the world do they help you lose weight?

Kellman says up until now, diets have left out the most important part of the weight loss equation and that is the microbiome. These trillions of cells know your metabolism... and as we all know, in order to maintain a good healthy weight, you need a good metabolism. Kellman is the author of The Microbiome Diet Book but explains this is really not a diet at all; it's a way of changing your eating habits and creating a healthier lifestyle for yourself.

In order to start losing weight, dietary changes do have to take place and you need to take care of these little guys in your gut. The first and most important part of that? Feeding them the proper nutrition.

What do friendly bacteria like to eat?

Compounds that are found in various foods such as artichokes, leeks, jicama, radishes, kiwi, asparagus, garlic and even onions. These foods must be included in your diet so that you are not only feeding your hunger, but you're also feeding the bacterial helpers that keep you healthy and that help you lose weight.

Does it work, though?

Dr. Kellman states that weight loss is a step to becoming healthy overall. He tells his patients not to cut back on foods, but instead add the foods he recommends. Over time, the desire for the bad foods will simply vanish.
