Dieting Fads: Get the Facts
dieting-fads-get-the-factsKeeping up with the latest diet fads? If you think any of these diets are going to keep you slim for long periods of time, think again. The latest diet fads are endless and forever changing, so how can you even keep up? How do you know which ones work and which ones do not?

Between the no-carb diets and the juice cleanses, you may try anything to get the weight off. However, according to special guest, Erika Katz, you can't expect to drop 10 pounds on one of these diets and then go back to eating what you were eating before and keep those pounds off. If it's truly a fad, it's not going to work.

To achieve permanent weight loss, you must make lifestyle changes.

Which fad diets, specifically, should you be wary of?

Erika warns about juice cleansing. She is not a proponent of this type of weight loss because it puts your body into stress mode.

Essentially, you are depleting your body of calories. Initially, your cortisol starts revving and your adrenaline starts buzzing and you begin to feel really good. But then, your body starts to go into its own tissue to find the glucose it needs or the carbs it needs to function, and as a result your body gets extremely stressed and your metabolism slows down.

So, although you may feel good for the first couple of days, it's short lived and the fact is this: you can't live on juice your whole life.

To find a healthier, long-term weight loss solution, the bottom line is you have eat -- and actually eat to feel full with -- healthy proteins and healthy carbs. Don't starve yourself. When you starve yourself, again, you are stressing your body. Sure, you may lose weight in the beginning, but eventually you will gain the weight right back. Do what you can to maintain long-term; do not do anything extreme.

Katz also suggests that you share these healthy eating tips with your tweens and teens as well. Make sure you prep your child for the changes in life, especially your daughters. Part of growing into a woman is being a little curvy; let them know there's nothing wrong with that, and it may prevent them from wanting to stop eating or even developing a life-changing eating disorder.
