A New Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Radiation Therapy
breakthrough-in-breast-cancer-radiation-therapyA new breakthrough can make radiation therapy for breast cancer patients more effective, while avoiding danger to the heart and lungs.

We are in the final days of breast cancer awareness month, and Dr. Julia White of the Ohio State University joins Dr. Kaskel  to discuss a new breakthrough for those women who are unfortunately faced with radiation therapy. Dr. White shares how this new technique can actually help make the therapy more effective.

This therapy is for women who have decided to keep their breasts and do radiation therapy because they are in the early stages of breast cancer. When a woman has a breast-conserving surgery, she then has to go through breast radiotherapy in order to make the procedure just as effective as breast removal.

Although the methods used today in breast radiotherapy as a whole are very safe, there are still some challenges for some women due to their breast shape and because they are lying on their back. It makes it challenging to encompass the breast and avoid the heart and lungs, as well as keep the radiation evenly distributed so it doesn't cause late scarring.

Now, there is a new way to do radiotherapy and it's called prone breast radiotherapy. This treatment is done with the woman lying on her belly. When a woman is lying on her belly, gravity does its magic and the breasts fall away from the lung cavity. This prevents the radiation from skimming the heart and lungs.

There is a new specialized board to assist in this new therapy so that the breasts can fall through that hole and allow the therapy to be done effectively.

Listen in as Dr. White explains more about this revolutionary new treatment, and how it might be an option for you or someone you love.
