By all accounts, Russian bots played a big part in tipping the election to Trump, in large part by using data to hyper-target Americans and inundate them with misinformation - a strategy called "Active Measures".

But how did they have so much information about Americans? And where did they get it?

All roads seem to lead to Cambridge Analytica, a mysterious company that Steve Bannon was on the board of until recently, likely owned by Robert Mercer, the billionaire behind Trump, Brexit, and Citizens United. It's a complicated story, but Ann Marlowe (@AnnMarlowe) has been following it longer than most, and she's here to explain as much as we can understand.
